Tarzan and the great ape Goro traveled slowly as was the habit of the Mangani. Foraging for food was a never ending pursuit as they could not carry any with them, the jungle was a ready storehouse and food was plentiful.

Each night Tarzan would take out Jane’s picture and show it to Goro, in the hope that if Goro saw Jane before Tarzan, he would remember to protect her. The Mangani could remember, but they could also be easily distracted, and forget for long periods. Tarzan knew the limits of the Mangani mind it was by the repetition of showing Jane’s picture that, he hoped it would be impressed on Goro ape brain.

The village of Mbandaka proved friendly. The Harlan Expedition rested for a day, and hired natives from Chief Maluna to accompany them deeper into the unexplored Congo.

Tarzan and Goro were one-hundred miles to the south, as the Harlan Expedition left Mbandaka.

Barton and Alex Von Hoffman likewise hired natives at Mbandaka. The Harlan Expedition followed the Congo River east, while Barton took a parallel course deeper in the jungle to avoid being sighted by the other safari. The next village was three-hundred miles from Mbandaka. It was the village of Kisangan.

Slade knew he had to act at Kisangan or he would never have another chance to have Jane Clayton. He had talked to some of the native porters, and had learned that they were unhappy about the expedition. He thought, he could count on five or six if, he kidnapped the Clayton woman. Barton would be pissed, but so what?

The Harlan Expedition reached Kisangan after three weeks. The natives eyed the whites with suspicion, and were surly when spoken to. It was decided to push on after one night in the village to avoid trouble.

Tarzan and Goro were near Mbandaka one of the villages, Jane had mentioned in her telegram. It would be unwise to allow Goro to go among the natives so Tarzan spoke to the great ape. “Goro, Tarzan must go among the Gomangani. I want you to search for a trail to the east. If you find one follow it, and Tarzan will find you.”

“Goro, do as Tarzan say. Goro look for Tarzan’s mate.”

Tarzan nodded. “Yes, Goro, Tarzan will not be far behind you.”

The Ape-man left Goro, and headed for the village of Mbandaka. When Tarzan entered the village, he created a stir. While the natives had never met Tarzan, they had heard of the white man who lived with the great apes. He was taken before Chief Maluna. The Chief was so impressed with Tarzan that he ordered a feast in the Ape-man’s honor. Tarzan did not want to linger after the Chief told him that the Harlan Expedition had been there three weeks before. But Tarzan knew it would not be wise to insult the Chief by leaving.

Goro had no trouble locating the trail of the Harlan Expedition, but was puzzled by another trail that appeared to follow the first.
